Discovering a New Career Path with FPC: A Conversation with Steve Margalit
FPC Insider

In a recent episode of FPC Insider, Steve Margalit, Director of Franchise Development, sat down with Jeff Herzog, President of FPC, to talk about what makes owning an FPC franchise such an appealing—and often surprising—career move. The discussion offers an inside look at why so many experienced professionals are choosing to leave traditional corporate roles and chart a new course with FPC.

“I speak to franchise prospects all the time about this opportunity and how they could look to pivot their career when they’re ready to make a change,” Margalit explains. “This is an opportunity that most folks haven’t heard of or never really considered prior to.”

Building on the Career You Already Have

Many people considering a franchise imagine they’ll have to start completely over—perhaps running a restaurant or a retail store in an industry they know nothing about. FPC flips that script by helping owners use the industry knowledge and professional networks they already possess.

“People don’t have to reinvent themselves completely,” Margalit says. “Yes, it’s a reinvention of sorts because they’re not going to be doing the same exact function, but they’re going to be in an industry they’re very familiar with and potentially placing people in a functional discipline that they’ve lived in their whole life.”

For executives coming out of manufacturing, technology, or other corporate sectors, that familiarity is a powerful advantage. Instead of abandoning decades of expertise, they’re leveraging it to help other companies hire top talent—while building a business of their own.

Flexibility and Quality of Life

The desire for more control over work and family time is one of the biggest reasons prospects explore an FPC franchise. As Margalit puts it, “They’re looking for quality of life. Look, no matter what you do, you’re going to have to work hard, but this gives the person an opportunity to kind of control their own destiny. If you’re going to work hard, you want to be the beneficiary of that hard work 100 percent.”

Travel is another key factor. After years of living out of suitcases, many seasoned professionals are ready to stay closer to home. “A lot of people that are constantly on the road—they want to be around their family,” Margalit says. “This business gives them an opportunity to stay close to home in a place that they want to live.”

Family involvement is common, too. “One of the spouses starts the business and then the other spouse comes in,” Margalit explains. “Whether it’s running a desk and actually making placements or being an office manager, this business has a number of facets and it dovetails really well as a family business. It’s very scalable at a relatively low cost.”

A Proven System with Strong Returns

While independence is a big draw, so is the proven model and support network. FPC’s history stretches back more than six decades. “We’ve been in business since 1959, and putting people into business as franchisees since 1973,” Margalit says, “Anyone considering doing this on their own should understand that there’s far more to it than meets the eye — most people don’t realize how much they don’t know until they’re already in it.  If you think you know 90 percent of how to get started, it’s that 10 percent where the magic happens.”

The revenue potential can be eye-opening. “The average fee across the system is $34,000 per transaction,” Margalit reveals. “It doesn’t take that many transactions in a given year to generate a pretty good amount of revenue.”

Franchisees also gain access to training and a wealth of best practices. “Our only goal is to get you successful as quickly as possible,” Margalit notes. “We’ve pretty much seen it all. We want to help you avoid the pitfalls that you’re not aware exist.”

Community and Connection

For many owners, the collaborative culture is what keeps them energized. “Owning a business for yourself, but not by yourself,” Herzog observes. Margalit agrees: “We create, as you mentioned, some of the virtual calls that we do—it’s a virtual water cooler of sorts. It allows you to feel like you’re part of something bigger, even if when you’re getting this business off the ground your office is very small or perhaps it’s just yourself.”

Regular peer meetings, ongoing training, and corporate support help franchisees stay connected, share wins, and overcome challenges together. That sense of community can be invaluable for entrepreneurs who might otherwise feel isolated.

Ready to Explore What’s Possible?

As Herzog concludes, “Instead of working really hard to fulfill somebody else’s mission, you’re working really, really hard to fulfill your mission and build something sustainable.”

If you’re curious about what owning an FPC franchise could mean for your career and lifestyle, Steve Margalit welcomes a no-commitment conversation. You might discover that the next chapter of your professional life is closer—and more rewarding—than you ever imagined.
